Soft fruit corner

This week we planted some blueberries and raspberries in our Edible garden. We had to read the instructions on the box and also work out what could be the best place with the most sun. We cant wait to see what will happen!

Rocket Science project

Dear Rocket Science applicant,

The seeds are back!
At 04:26am on Tuesday 2nd March, Commander Scott Kelly of NASA and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov of Roscosmos landed safely back on Earth in Kazakhstan. The seeds then travelled with Scott Kelly to NASA in Houston on a charter flight from Moscow, Russia and returned to the UK on Thursday. We are now getting ready to pack them up so they can be sent to you with your Rocket Science experiment pack in April!

While we prepare the packs for you, now is a good time to make sure you have all your equipment ready, if you haven’t already. Below you will find what you need, where you can buy it and also what you could start thinking about before your pack arrives.
Please read through all of the following information carefully.

For schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland: we will be aiming to deliver your packs on Tue 12th or Wed 13th April ready to sow your seeds on 19th or 20th April (this is important to avoid you having to take any measurements on weekends and to ensure you can finish the experiment before school breaks up for half term).

For schools in Scotland: we will be delivering your packs on the 18th or 19th April and we would recommend sowing your seeds on 19thor 20th April to be in line with other schools, however you can sow your seeds a week later on 26th or 27th as you don’t break up for half term like other schools.

If for any reason you cannot fit into these dates and your experiment will run into the holidays, you will need to make plans to ensure someone can come into school to look after the seedlings and take the appropriate measurements. From the date of sowing, measurements will need to be taken on days 10, 17, 21, 28 and 35 so please account for this.

To take part in the experiment you will need:
·         1 x 25l bag of compost (we suggest either seed and cutting compost or a general multipurpose compost)
·         2 x 2l clean plastic milk bottles*
·         8 x standard seed trays (to act as a base)
·         5 x P40 modular seed trays (trays with 40 cells)
*we recommend using clear plastic milk bottles for your seedling labels as they will ensure that all seedlings get an equal amount of light. If you plan to use regular plant labels, you will need to ensure you turn your seed trays 180° every two days. This will help reduce differentiation in the seedlings growth.
